Leadership in the Euro’s – It works On and Off the Pitch

Having taken a couple of days to reflect on the sporting achievement of the England Women’s Football Team and their success in the Euro’s we have reflected on the great leadership of Sarina Wiegman and what a great role model she is. Whether you are leading a team out onto a pitch or in a hotel, success comes from great leadership and great teams.

We asked ourselves what qualities does a good leader need and looked to Sarina Wiegman of what we felt she gave the England Women’s Team. The team have all spoken about the confidence she instilled in each and every player on an individual level and ensured they believed in themselves so they could perform at their very best.

As a leader, building your team’s confidence and self-belief means creating an environment where you can listen and respond to their higher needs. It’s about leaders nurturing and modelling an organisational culture that’s inclusive, safe, developmental, and inspiring to drive a positive mindset shift. By investing in building confidence first, leaders will develop teams that are more willing and open to adapt which can motivate the change that an organisation needs to succeed.

There was discipline but above all passion. If you love what you do – you can do anything. This brings us back to Hospitality – when everyone is passionate about their jobs, their roles it makes for happy customers which then increases revenue and makes people want to come back! We know its rocket science but it was proved on the pitch on Sunday that great leadership makes for a winning team.

We can see from the whole of the Euros tournament that the England team was aligned, and everyone bought into the purpose that Weigman outlined. They were clear on their own objectives within the team and how they contributed towards the desired result – whether that’s was a role in the starting line-up, as a substitute or behind the scenes. Their goal was to win as a team.

This is absolutely a lesson that hospitality leaders should take into their own organisations. Is your company’s purpose clear? Does it have the buy-in from every person in your organisation? Clear direction and purpose is essential in all our hotels to be a success.

This all means so much to us to us at Four Corners Hospitality Group, whether its one of our Experts leading and supporting a Commercial Team in one of our hotels or when we are working on an Executive Resourcing project great leadership is fundamental to what we look for whilst searching for the right candidates to fulfil the Executive Roles we recruit for and Sarina Wiegman is the perfect role model – on and off the pitch!
